Upgrade K6.x

The actual installation procedure takes less than two minutes on most sites. Kunena is a Joomla component and it is installed like any other Joomla extension using the Joomla installer.

Upgrading software is not something to be done impulsively. It requires good planning and site preparation. The key to a successful and trouble-free upgrade of Kunena depends on having a solid Joomla foundation upon which you can build a web-based discussion forum. This solid foundation relies as much on your own understanding about how to install Joomla extensions as it does on having a dependable hosted environment.

It’s important to backup first before doing the upgrade. Also create an additional backup of the Kunena database tables!

Upgrade from Kunena 5.1 or 5.2 to Kunena 6.x

An upgrade to K6.1xis only possible from the Kunena versions K5.1 and K5.2

These steps have always worked in tests to upgrade from Joomla 3.10 to Joomla 4.x and Kunena 6.x

  1. Uninstall all Kunena extensions, they are not customized for Kunena 6.x
  2. Uninstall Kunena via the Joomla extension manager (it uninstalls the Forum along whith the Kunena menu)
  3. If there are other (custom) menu items that relate to your Kunena forum, remove all these menus and menu items
  4. Upgrade Joomla 3.10 to 4.x Joomla 3.x to 4.x Step by Step Migration
  5. Now check your Joomla site if everything works correctly
  6. If everything is ok, create a full backup again
  7. Install Kunena 6.x
  8. Go to the Kunena Dashboard

Create the Kunena menu

  1. Click on this button in the Dashboard, or navigate manually from the Dashboard to Tools -> Menu Manager

  1. Click on top the button Restore Kunena Menu

  1. Go to the main menu and publish the menu item created for you in your top-level/main menu.

The forum should now be ready. Finally, check that everything is in place and working.
