Introduction

Kunena installation package supports many languages out of the box. Those languages are updated automatically when you install or upgrade Kunena. Current list of included languages can be found in our download page. It is possible that a language available in an older version of Kunena is not available in the version that you intend to upgrade to. We remind you to first check the download page.

For those whose language was not included in the main package, our download page contains a language pack, which includes every translated language, both complete and incomplete. If your language has not been included in the distribution, we recommend that you install the most recent language pack every time you upgrade Kunena. This language pack may be updated more often than Kunena itself, depending on the work of our translators.

To see the status of your language, please visit our Transifex page.

This article explains where to obtain and how to install language packs for Kunena 1.7. You may also want to read the article Where is the language file?

Language Packs for Kunena

Official language pack

Our official language pack can be found in our download page. It contains only those language files which have been fully translated. This is because of Joomla doesn't support partly translated languages too well -- untranslated strings show up like COM_KUNENA_THIS_IS_THE_KEY. So if you start seeing strings like this, your translation isn't up to date and Kunena still uses the old version of the translation.

Installing languages in Joomla! 1.7 and 2.5

Just install language pack by using Joomla installer. All the available languages will be updated during the installation process. If you add more languages into your site, you need to install the language pack again to include missing languages.

Recommended way for Joomla! 1.7 and 2.5 is to have all language files inside the extension folders. This installer does just that, but it also removes all the old Kunena language files from /language and /administrator/language folders.

WARNING: Do not attempt to install the language archive files by hand! They are Joomla! 1.5 installer files. Installing those files in Joomla! 1.7 or 2.5 has some side effects, which may cause you to accidentally uninstall the whole language. If you have already installed Kunena language files by hand, you can fix the issue by installing your Joomla! core language again.

Installing languages in Joomla! 1.5

In Joomla! 1.5 you have to extract the files from the archive and install them one by one.

For each language, there are two files that you need to install. For example, the files for the English language packs are:

language/com_kunena.en_GB.admin_v@kunenaversion@.zip
language/com_kunena.en_GB.site_v@kunenaversion@.zip

Using the standard Joomla installation procedure:

Install the "admin" (backend) file
Install the "site" (frontend) file

The first file contains the language strings for the administrator (backend) and the second file contains the language strings for the frontend.

Finding the latest update

Usually translators add their updated language packs to the Kunena forum under Kunena User Contributions and Third-Party Options » Translations » Official Language Packs for K 1.7. So the forum might be a good place to look up updated language files or to contact the translators.

Completing the translation

Many of the languages in this package are missing translations. To see the status of your language, please visit our Transifex status page.

If you think you can complete the remaining parts of a translation, or you could write a translation that has not yet been written for Kunena, the Kunena translation team invites you to participate in the Transifex project. If you have the skills and you would like to help, please look at the Transifex article to see how you can help us with our translation work. See also Translating Kunena.
